AND MORE
A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a story conveyed with moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry.
Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue into the language of the viewer.
Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.
The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term cinema or film is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies.
The year 2010 saw many new films released worldwide. 2010 saw a dramatic increase and prominence in the use of 3D-technology in filmmaking and movie releases after the success of Avatar in the format, with releases such as Alice in Wonderland, Clash of the Titans, Jackass 3D, all animated films and numerous other titles being released in 3D formats.Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland have both grossed more than $1 billion, making them the fifth and sixth highest-grossing films at the worldwide box office, respectively. 2010 marks the first time in history that two films grossed more than $1 billion at the box office in the same year. Even more impressively, both films were released by the same studio − Walt Disney Pictures. In addition, both films are rated below PG-13, and this hasn't happened since 1983. Also, Toy Story 3 is the highest-grossing animated film ever, worldwide, and the first animated film to gross $1 billion. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is also in the Top 10 at #10, making 2010 the only year with 3 movies in the Top 10 of all time. Three other films — Inception, Shrek Forever After and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – are also among the fifty highest-grossing films of all time. This is also the first time that four animated films have been present in the Top 10 highest-grossing films of the year and the fifth time two animated features are in the Top 5 after 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2004. This year saw four movies debut with more than $100 million, breaking the opening record of 2007 with three releases and 2004 with two releases.
